The case of the missing bishop

Players deep in their games along the long tables on the patio at Kava Social on a Tuesday study night

“A missing bishop and knight, a welcome back for Bob, and chapter 37 on the seventh rank.”

Harold Gonzalez · Club director

Tuesday opened with a mystery. πŸ•΅οΈ A bishop and a knight went missing from one of the sets, and what followed was a full manhunt: pockets checked, camera footage reviewed, phone calls made. Then, just as mysteriously, both pieces turned up back in the sets. Case closed, nobody charged. πŸ˜‚

Welcome back, Bob, home for the winter season. Good to have you back at the boards. πŸ‘‹

Then chapter 37 of 40 Lessons for the Club Player: invading the seventh rank, and the space advantage that gets you there. A rook on your opponent's second rank eats pawns, pins the king to the back row and ties every defender down. Win space first, and the invasion squares open up. β™œ

We sparred from the position below. With White to move, Stockfish's verdict is blunt: take the knight on e5 right now. Anything slower and Black is better by almost five pawns. β™ŸοΈ

The end of the book is in sight. Coming up: Costume Chess Night this Sunday, 1 November, and Battle for the Bay 2 on Sunday 15 November at 7 PM. πŸŽƒβš”οΈ
