How a night goes
Any time after 8PM. Kava Social Club is at 540 13th St W in downtown Bradenton; the club is on the thatched-roof back patio, so walk straight through. Scan the QR code at the door on your way in.
The venue hosts us for free, so everyone orders one item. Kava, tea, cold brew, a soda — anything. Nothing here has alcohol.
Tell anyone at a board. Someone will set you up against a player around your level and explain anything you've forgotten.
Sets and clocks are on the tables. Games are casual unless you ask for the league. Stay for one game or until midnight.
What to bring
Nothing. Sets and clocks are provided, and there is no membership and no dues. Bring a friend if you like — half the room came that way.
Who you'll play
Adults of every level: people who learned last month, people who play rated tournaments, and a National Master who will sit down with a beginner. Stronger players are here to teach, not to hunt easy wins — the code of conduct makes that a rule.
Questions people ask first
Do I need to know the rules?
Knowing how the pieces move is enough. Anything else — castling, en passant, how the clock works — someone will show you at the board.
Which night should I come first?
Sunday. Every other Sunday is social night: free play, no pressure. The others are league night, still open to walk-ins. Tuesday is study night, where the room works through a lesson together — a good second visit.
How much does it cost?
Nothing to join and nothing per night. You order one item from the bar, and that's it. Rated tournaments have an entry fee, listed with the event.
Is there an age limit?
Club nights are 21 and over because of the venue. Some tournaments are 18 and over, and the event listing says so. Private lessons are open to all ages.
Do I need a rating or a US Chess membership?
No. Neither is needed for club nights. A US Chess membership is only needed to play in our rated tournaments.
Can I just watch?
Yes. Pull up a chair. Just don't comment on a game in progress — that is the one thing the room takes seriously.
Is it alcohol-free?
Yes. The venue is a kava bar — kava, teas, cold brew, soft drinks — and the club is alcohol-free too.
Do you speak Spanish?
Yes. The director and several members are bilingual, and the whole site is in Spanish too.
