Season 10 opens

Season 10 is under way. Sixteen players filled three long tables on the patio at Kava Social for the opening league night, five rounds under the string lights, and by the end of it Scott had done something nobody else managed all evening: he won every game he played. Five out of five in the over-1400s, a full two points clear of Alex, Harold and Mathew, who shared second on 3.

Below him the brackets were a lot tighter. Omar Cruz dropped a single game on his way to 4 of 5 in the under-1400s, a point ahead of Josh, with Zack, Brian O and Mel locked together on 2. The under-1000s went all the way to the last round and finished in a dead heat: Sonny and Maddie share the top spot on 2 points, with a whole season of Sundays left to settle it. Derek, Thomas, Diego and Sam left before the final round; their scores stand as played. The next league night is Sunday 27 September.

The night ran on the club's own software for the first time. KAVA Pairings, written by the director, took the sixteen names, paired every round, kept the scores and the in-house ratings, and published the standings and the league table before the last boards were packed away. Nobody shouted pairings across the patio and nobody argued about a result. Five rounds in three brackets, sixteen players, one phone.
